Sustainability Communications

Sustainability communications make sustainability efforts visible and support transparency, consistency and impact.

We help companies develop both internal and external sustainability communications. We ensure that such communication complies with regulations, whether concerning sustainability reporting, stakeholder communications, or marketing.

Sustainability Communications at the Core of Corporate Communications

Sustainability communication is an integral part of company’s strategy. Its purpose is to make sustainability efforts transparent, communicate them consistently, and share goals and impacts with stakeholders. Effective sustainability communications build trust, strengthen the brand and help companies stand out in the market.

We design and implement impactful, genuinely responsible communication solutions that meet both client needs and regulatory requirements. We ensure compliance with the EmpCo Directive, Green Claims Directive, CSRD, and consumer protection legislation.

We help organizations identify and articulate sustainability messages without the risk of greenwashing. At the same time, we help identify genuine sustainability achievements that can and should be communicated as part of corporate communications.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Sustainability Communications

Greenwashing refers to misleading communication or marketing regarding environmental friendliness. It creates a more positive impression of a product’s, service’s, or company’s environmental impact than reality warrants. Intentional deception is not required. Even carefully prepared claims can be considered misleading if they are too broad, insufficiently substantiated, or based on outdated data that could influence a purchasing decision.

In Finland, greenwashing is assessed under the Consumer Protection Act, considering whether false or misleading information has been provided, whether material information has been omitted, and what overall impression the marketing creates.

Examples of Greenwashing
  • Overgeneralization
  • Unsubstantiated claims
  • Implied environmental benefits
  • Irrelevant claims

As regulation becomes stricter, companies should not resort to “greenhushing”, meaning remaining silent about sustainability efforts out of fear of criticism. Sustainability communications simply require greater transparency, focusing on material actions and verifiable results.

The key is building credibility and trust with consumers. Communications should be based on verifiable facts. It is also beneficial to communicate challenges and areas that are still under development. When the facts are solid, the risks of greenwashing can be avoided.

Openness and transparency are essential for building trust.

Understanding the sustainability impacts of your business is a powerful way to clarify and strengthen your brand based on genuine sustainability actions.

The process begins with identifying the environmental and social impacts of your operations, including both positive and negative effects. An important part of this work is recognizing your stakeholders, especially those who benefit positively from your business activities. In our experience, many organizations have not fully considered all the ways their operations affect different groups of people.

A key element of building and articulating a sustainable brand is exploring whether the business has a higher purpose and how its values are reflected in everyday operations.
