Nature-related impacts are individual activities or actions that degrade ecosystems, disrupt their functioning and contribute to biodiversity loss, including species extinction and habitat degradation.

A nature footprint, in contrast, measures the combined impact of an organisation’s activities on nature. It quantifies the overall effect of an organisation’s operations on biodiversity and ecosystems.

Identifying nature-related impacts helps organisations better understand:

Biodiversity, or biological diversity, refers to the variety of genes, species and ecosystems in a given area.

Genetic diversity helps species remain healthy and adapt to changing conditions. Species diversity supports balanced interactions between different species, while ecosystem diversity determines the range of habitats available and the variety of species an area can support.

When biodiversity declines, species become more vulnerable to extinction. This is often caused by the degradation or loss of their habitats. For this reason, biodiversity is frequently assessed at the ecosystem level, as healthy ecosystems provide the foundation for diverse plant and animal life.

Biodiversity loss refers to the rapid decline in the variety of life on Earth, including the loss of species, genetic diversity and ecosystems. As biodiversity declines, species populations shrink, habitats become degraded, and ecosystems lose their ability to function effectively. This threatens ecosystem services, food production and the conditions that support life on Earth.

Organisations can contribute to biodiversity loss through both their own operations and their value chains, at local, regional and global levels.

According to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the five direct drivers of biodiversity loss are:
